Swamp Milkweed Nectarbird
Bibinectarium asclepias
One of the most decorative of the Nectarbirds, the Swamp Milkweed Nectarbird is nearly
indistinguishable from its native foliage when nestled among Swamp Milkweed blooms. These
nectarbirds have a very small and narrow tongue, to feed on each individual, tiny blossom
without damaging the plant as a whole. Bees sometimes mistake this Nectarbird's head plumage as
actual flowers, and usually end up snatched up as a snack by its quick beak.
